The Aliens 3D Theater was originally designed as a new attraction for the Everland Theme Park in Korea. Aliens 3D was the brainchild of Gary Goddard while we working at Landmark Entertainment Group. Aliens 3D was designed to follow the successful formula of T2-3D which we had created for Universal Studios. The Show was designed to mix 3D 870 film on three screens seamlessly with live actors, animatronics and special effects. Everland acquired the rights to the Fox Pictures property, in order to have the special effects film directed by James Cameron and Gary Goddard.
The Aliens 3D project was a watershed project for the Landmark team in a number of ways. This project represented the first time that we fully integrated computer aided design, digital imaging, computer modeling and computer animation into the entire design and production process. This project utilized a 3d computer model as the basis for all design and production drawings, set designs and design details. This process allowed us to tightly integrate with the facilities shell design to incorporate large amounts of scenic "materials" directly into the facility construction- significantly reducing the amount of scenic materials required to apply "over" the shell design. |

Another significant advantage to the all digital process utilized for this project was in the clarity of communication with our Korean clients. Taking advantage of render farm capabilities and computer animation to clearly depict circulation, ambience and function in animation form gave the client a much clearer understanding of the intent and planned execution of this project. Add the ability to transmit that information back and forth via the web for review and comment afforded the client a high level of comfort as the project progressed.
The tight level of integration was accomplished by changing the project management model as well. The project was accomplished with a small team of architects, technical directors, set designers, writtes and artists working as an integrated whole from the conception phase forward. This constant fertile "cross pollination" of ideas and solutions was core to the successful design evolution. This production model has become the core of the Gen3 Entertainment Arts design and production management style. |
